MACROBIOTICS IN THE UNITED STATES: An Assessment of Services and Activities

Study Areas in South Carolina: Columbia, Charleston

Columbia, SC

Map of Columbia

Summary and Impressions of the Macrobiotic Community: Columbia's macrobiotic history is rich with experience, sparked significantly by Norman Arnold's incredible recovery. When Norman, a well known businessman, was diagnosed with terminal pancreatic cancer in the early 1980's, he invited Marsha Halprin, a macrobiotic cooking teacher, to move to Columbia. Marsha taught cooking, gave lectures and prepared up to a 100 takeout meals a day at her house. After Marsha passed away in 1992, Trena Barnes took over the macrobiotic cooking classes and also hosted paid dinners at her home. Trena is still active in the community, and hosts Lino and Jane Stanchich when they come to Columbia every 2-3 months. Monthly potluck dinners have been going on for 20 years. Two macrobiotic restaurants in Columbia indicate the continuing support local residents provide to maintain macrobiotic activity.

Charleston, SC

Map of Charleston

Summary and Impressions of the Macrobiotic Community:  Sherryann St Cyr used to prepare simple macrobiotic meals in the area but she is no longer living in Charleston.  The history of other macrobiotic activity in the past is not available. Charleston residents have depended on the Columbia macrobiotic community 110 miles away for its source of activity until Roxanne Koteles moved there less than a year ago. Roxanne brings to Charleston not only her rich cooking knowledge and experience, but a dynamic personality, a good hearted nature, and boundless energy.  Since arriving in Charleston, she has persuaded about one hundred residents to start a macrobiotic diet, and has begun to spread her wings in Savannah and Atlanta as well.  We believe that Roxanne's strong leadership and integrity will continue to change the macrobiotic scene in Charleston significantly.
