| Summary and
Impressions
of the Macrobiotic Community:
Nobody was found in the
entire area with any information about macrobiotics. I
did talk to Charlene Nixon of Indianapolis who used to give cooking lessons
at the Wild Oats
supermarket in Las Vegas in the
late 1990s, but she could not give me any leads to other macrobiotic
people in the area who were still following this lifestyle.
During the time Charlene lived in Las Vegas, David Jackson would come
periodically, about every 18-24 months, to
give consultations to people who were referred to him from the Kushi
Institute (KI), or the
macrobiotic directory. The
one person Charlene remembered from Las Vegas no longer practices
macrobiotics and could not give us further information about the
community. Not only was there no macrobiotic
community in Las Vegas, but all my efforts to find anyone who practices
macrobiotics were in vain. I hoped to have better luck in Reno; there I found Natalie Palmer,
a blackjack dealer, who completed all the levels at the KI, advertises
herself, though not intensely, as a cooking instructor, but has had only
one client in her eight years of practice. |
