Summary and Impressions of the Macrobiotic Community: Alice Blistein and David Jackson were associated with macrobiotics for 10 years in Tucson giving dinners and lectures. Alice started her macrobiotic career as a cook on a guest ranch. Tucson had an active community when Alice Blistein and David Jackson were actively pursuing macrobiotic services. Although Alice still lives in Tucson and provides cooking services, community focus has diminished completely.

Visiting Counselors and Cooking Teachers: Verne Varona came in June 2001 to promote his new book; Bob Carr and Lino Stanchich visited years ago but there is no activity today.

Other Counselor Interests: Alice owns a music store.

Macrobiotic Restaurants: No macrobiotic restaurants; 6 restaurants have vegan options in addition to Wild Oats supermarket.

Independent Natural Food Stores: Aqua Vita (shutting down), Arizona Health Foods, Food Conspiracy. 
Natural Food Co-Ops: Tucson Cooperative Warehouse.

Macrobiotic Community Assessment: Moderate Activities: No resident or visiting counselors, 1 part time resident cooking teacher. Macro services started about 10 years ago. Dormant Activity: No activity.
Area Description: Tucson is a commercial and research center of the Southwest. Its warm, dry, sunny climate makes it a popular health and winter resort area and retirement center. The University of Arizona, federal, state and local governments are the city's major employers. Its metropolitan area population is 666,900.
