Community Description

Area Description

Santa Fe is the capital of New Mexico and a major tourist center of the Southwest. The charm of the city's adobe houses and narrow winding streets helps attract many visitors.  Federal, state and city government agencies and the tourism industry are the city's chief employees.  Its metropolitan area population is 117,000.

Summary and Impressions of the Community

In 1986, the Skardis family began macrobiotics in Santa Fe.  Dr Jonas and Celeste Skardis have a rich macrobiotic history combined with a medical background (Jonas) and Oriental medicine (Celeste). Jonas and Celeste counseled in the early years; Celeste continues to give macrobiotic counseling services, and Jonas now focuses only on his acupuncture work.  There were potluck dinners for 10 years with lecturers, but that has stopped. Santa Fe is blessed with a very experienced professional counselor and several cooking teachers. Lindsay Rice also offers an online newsletter, "Nourishing Spirit".
