Area Description

Salt Lake City is the capitol and largest city of Utah.  The Mormon Church has its headquarters there. They form more than half the city's population.  The city lies in the Salt Lake Valley in the foothills of the Wasatch Range of the Rocky Mountains.  It is about 15 miles southeast of Great Salt Lake.  The metropolitan area population is 1,072,200.

Summary and Impressions of the Community

There was an active center until 1988.  Macrobiotic potlucks started in 1986 and continued for 10 years. During this time there were paid macro dinners, a newsletter, visiting counselors and teachers. Anita Catron was a strong leader of the local macrobiotic community, until recently. Services are currently available from Sylvia Gray and Lois Sprunt, but community cohesion is lacking. Macrobiotic counseling and cooking services are still available in the area, however, and there are sufficient resources to support a macrobiotic lifestyle.
