Area Description

Minneapolis is the largest city in Minnesota and a major Midwestern center of finance, industry, trade and transportation.  It is the home of the University of Minnesota, one of the nation's largest universities.  It lies in southeastern Minnesota, just west of St Paul, its twin city.  The metropolitan area population is 2,538,834.

Summary and Impressions of the Community

In the late 1980's, Mary Win started macrobiotic teaching and counseling in Minneapolis-St Paul.  The area now has counseling and cooking services, and a plethora of resources, including seven food co-ops, the most in any city in the United States. Like many other macrobiotic communities it lacks structured activities. Christine Stevens and Gabrielle Kushi are very busy counseling individuals and cooking, but there are no regular potluck or paid macrobiotic dinners.

Macrobiotic Community Assessment

Moderate Services:  2 counselors & 2 cooking teachers, occasional visiting counselors.  Dormant Activities:  No dinners or pot lucks; 7 food co ops—more than anywhere.  Macro services started in the late 1980’s but there was no center.
