Calculating Core Energies for A Numerology Reading; Excerpts from "Getting To Know You: A Numerology Textbook"
Num
erology
is the study of the significance of numbers. It reveals our strengths,
weaknesses, deep inner needs, emotional truths, and ways of dealing with our
own and other's inherent talents. Numerology allows one to discern who he
is, how he functions, likes and dislikes, weaknesses and strengths. The
information from a reading implies no judgment of good or bad, or criticism;
it provides the potentials a person had when he started out in life before
making changes based on experiences, and personal values through an
expression of free will.
Numerology assumes the truth of reincarnation. Nevertheless, without a belief in multiple lifetimes, numerology is still valid and compelling. Each time the soul makes the decision to reincarnate in a physical body it chooses its experiences, abilities and the desires it hopes to satisfy. With each subsequent incarnation, the soul carries karmic debts—the vestiges of misused energies in previous lives—and karmic lessons, potentials that have been ignored or unexplored in past existences. Numerology deciphers the decisions of our repeated births, coded into the birthday and name.
Numerology is akin to the occult sciences of astrology, tarot, I Ching, palmistry and astrology. Each of these complements the others, and all are true. They answer questions about where we came from, where we are going, and most importantly, what we are doing here and what is expected from us. The beauty of this knowledge is the ability it offers us to enhance the desired aspects of our lives, remove or minimize the unwanted, and hence create a smooth and successful life.
NUMEROLOGY READINGS
There are approximately twenty-five components derived from a person’s birthday and name. They comprise four core elements and thirteen modifiers of that core, describing the personality, and eight time-cycles that together provide information about past, present and future. The core, or essence of a person—his strengths, weaknesses, and potential for change and development—comprises the four core elements exclusively.
The core elements are like a fuzzy, unfocused photograph of a person, revealing his major characteristics. It is the major determinant of a person’s character in general terms. The core consists of the following elements: Life Path, Expression, Soul Urge and Birthday.
Modifiers sharpen the view of the person, clarifying the energetic balance or imbalance of his characteristics, and sometimes coloring the core reading significantly. For example, the modifiers clarify whether a person with a core tendency toward freedom and change may easily realize this potential, or might struggle with these desires despite their appearance in his core energy.
Numbers representing specific energies describe each core element and modifier. There are nine single digit energies, from 1 to 9, and the two master numbers, 11 and 22. Together they represent a person’s possible awarenesses, experiences, talents and characteristics. The master numbers are the highest levels of human potential.
Core Energies
· Life Path
The Life Path is the most important energy in a numerology reading. When the soul decides to reincarnate it chooses a main focus for that life time. This is expressed in the Life Path, the purpose of one’s present life. The Life Path also reveals opportunities available to attain this chosen goal. Many people are unclear about what they want to do with their lives, so this number can be enlightening.
The Life Path is calculated from the month, day and year of birth added together and then reduced to either a single digit, or 11 and 22, the two master numbers. The month, day and year, sub-elements of the Life Path, have importance of their own. The four core energies are not of equal significance. The Life Path has a relative importance of about forty percent of the four core energies combined.
The lower the numerical digit of the Life Path, the less complex is the lesson to be learned. Life Paths 1 to 6 deal with fundamental concepts; 7, 8, and 9 deal with more complex understandings as advanced lessons of the previous numbers. The master numbers 11 and 22 represent the most complex aspects of life. The higher the number, the more difficult it is to reach the full potential in the course of one's life.
Table 1 lists the nine single digit energies and two master numbers, their keywords, positive and negative characteristics.

Positive aspects mean that the energy in question is in balance and there are no obstacles preventing their achievement. Imbalanced energies are either deficient or excessive, resulting in one or more difficulties the person may want to overcome.
Expression
An individual's Expression is drawn from his birth name and reflects his potential or natural abilities. This is the personality visible to others rather than one's true essence. When the Expression and Life Path are harmonious, the Expression is said to reflect the main life lesson. When there is discord between the Expression and Life Path, the energy of the Life Path may be hidden. The Expression comprises thirty percent of the relative importance of the core energy, that is, twenty-five percent less than the Life Path.
To calculate the Expression number, add together the numerical value of the letters in each name as shown in Table 2 and reduce that sum to a single digit. Calculate each name one at a time rather than adding together the numerical values of all the names together. Although the Expression will be the same whether the individual names are analyzed together or separately, the difference is in the sub-elements of the Expression, and the possibility of a master number appearing in the calculation. Furthermore, the sub-elements signify the balance or imbalance of energies (see discussion below). The Expression is not affected by the number of letters there are in a name.

The higher the Expression number, the greater the natural talent for whatever career the person has chosen. The Expression number does not identify a specific type of work, nor the person's suitability for it, but rather describes his ability to do the job at hand. For example, a 1, 2, or 3 Expression signifies a relatively low ability to accomplish the chosen task; 4, 5 or 6 show average to above average ability; and 7, 8 or 9 represent very high natural abilities indicating someone able to excel in whatever work he chooses. An 11 or 22 master number signifies rare elevated potential difficult to realize. Unless the person strives to reach his master number potential, he will operate in his lower energy of 2 (reduce 11 to 1 + 1) or 4 (reduce 22 to 2 + 2).
The names must be those found on the individual's birth certificate. If there is a seeming error in how the name was written on this document, the exact spelling shown is the one to be used. Every child receives the name that is intended by the soul, and that is the one recorded on the birth certificate.
Many people either lack a birth certificate or don't know what is written on it. The same name may be spelled differently due to cultural or language differences. Names in foreign language alphabets need to be transliterated. In these instances try a passport or official document name, or simply take an educated guess. Try alternate spellings and rely on your intuition to interpret responses to characteristics indicated by the calculated Expression. In most cases you will be able to figure out the right spelling, or names.
If more than four names are given at birth, use only the first and last names, ignoring all the others. Some names have a prefix such as van den Heuvel, de Andrade, de la Caridad, San Miguel, etc. These prefixes are treated as single names, as if there were no space between the words. Names separated by a dash or hyphen are generally considered individual words. If initials are listed on the birth certificate, use each initial as if it were a full name.
Soul Urge
The Soul Urge is a person's motivating force—that which he wants to have or do in his life. It is sometimes called the Heart's Desire. The Soul Urge represents deep inner desires, things the person feels are the most important. When the Soul Urge is harmonious with the Life Path and Expression it is easily recognized. Otherwise it may lie dormant, unrecognized until revealed in a numerology reading.
The Soul Urge is concealed in the vowels of a name. These include the letters a, e, i, o, u and sometimes w or y. Y is considered a vowel when there is no other vowel in that syllable, for example, Nancy, Barry and Lynn. It is also considered a vowel when it is preceded by a, e, i, o or u, such as in the names Stanley, Boyle, Ray. A y in names such as Yale, Yoav and Yonatan are calculated as consonants, and not vowels. A w is counted as a vowel when it is preceded by the vowels a, e, i, o or u such as in the names Cowen, Shawn and Cauwenberghe. Forgetting to consider w and y as vowels is a common mistake among beginning numerologists and something to be avoided.
The best way to avoid mistakes is to always double check each numerical calculation by counting forwards and backwards and checking the numerical values of each letter. A misread energy creates an impression that is hard to change afterwards.
The higher the number of the Soul Urge, the greater is one’s natural motivation for his chosen work. A 1, 2, or 3 Soul Urge signify a relatively low motivation; a 4, 5 or 6 is average to above average; and 7, 8 or 9 represent high motivating forces typified by self starters with strong drive to realize their full potential. An 11 or 22 master number signifies extraordinary potential unavailable to most people. Not every one holding a master number is capable of reaching this high potential. Unless one strives to realize his master number, he/she will operate in the reduced 2 energy if the original number is 11, or 4 if he is a 22.
The relative importance of the Soul Urge is about half that of the Life Path, or twenty percent of the total weight of all the core energies. The emphasis of the Soul Urge energy, therefore, in the reading, would therefore be considerably less than the Life Path or Expression.
Birthday
The Birthday is the fourth, and least important, of the core energies, representing only about a quarter of the relative importance of the Life Path, or ten percent of the total weight.
As one of the numbers used in calculating the Life Path, the Birthday has special importance as a modifier of the Life Path. It does not modify the Expression or Soul Urge.
The Birthday is calculated by reducing the day of birth to a single digit or master number 11 or 22. Table 11 shows the reduced number for each day of the month. Birthday numbers 1 and 3 result from four different days of the month; 2 and 11 are derived from two different days of the month; the master number 22 is assigned only to those people born on the 22nd of the month; and all other Birthday numbers are derived from three different days. Thus, reduced Birthdays 1 and 3 are much more likely to appear than any other days, and there are relatively few people with 22 Birthday energies.
People born toward the end of a month have stronger characteristics than those with birthdays at the month’s beginning or middle. For instance, people born on the 30th of the month are excellent conversationalists whereas those born on the 3rd are good conversationalists. A 30th Birthday will produce an exceptionally affectionate and loving person; someone born on the 3rd day of the month will be somewhat colder.
Balanced and Unbalanced Core Energies
Balance/imbalance of energy is determined by examining the core energies—the Life Path, Expression, Soul Urge and Birthday—and the sub-elements that make up these energies. When two core energies are numerically close to each other, they are said to exist in balance.
A separation of seven or eight levels portends a considerable state of imbalance often resulting in great frustration in bridging the gap. It is important to point out these balances or imbalances in a core energy during the reading. The person generally senses them but often cannot identify the source of frustration.
There are seven to eleven sub-elements in the four core energies, depending on how many names a person has. When the core energies are different from each other and their sub-elements appear only once in a given core energy—including the sub-elements of the core energy-- a balanced spectrum of characteristics is operating. Many energies are active without being excessively concentrated. The person is well rounded and reasonable, experiencing few difficulties.
When different core energies share the same numerical value, and/or when a sub-element either appears more than once in a core element or is the same as the core energy it describes, that energy is overly concentrated, and its difficult characteristics are operating. The more often a numerical value is repeated in the core energy or sub-elements, the more challenging the condition. Each imbalanced energy needs to be examined separately for its harmonious and discordant characteristics. Harmony or discord applies both to an individual and to his relationship with others.
Modifiers
Modifiers revise or amend core energies, not the other way around. The relative importance of each modifier varies considerably.
The numerological modifiers include:
1. Karmic Debt
2. Intensity Table
3. Karmic Lessons and Modified Karmic Lessons
4. Prime Intensifier
5. Challenge
6. Growth Number
7. Maturity Number
8. Secret Self
9. Group Energies
10. Numbers Behind the Core Energies
11.Temperament
12. First Letter; First Vowel
The most important modifiers needed to describe one’s personality include the Karmic Debts, Intensities, and Karmic Lessons, though some of the other modifiers are also significant. The significance of all of these, their method of calculation and how they modify the core energies are described in detail in the textbook. Furthermore, the time cycles dealing with long, medium and short energies available are discussed and analyzed.
I suggest calculating core energies for yourself and some of the people close to you to get a sense of the information coming forth and the insights afforded. Later, when you wish to study numerology, have a personal reading, and/or buy my e-book you will be able to clarify what you have begun with the complete information made available.
