Jessica Porter in Israel
Jessica Porter--chef, cooking teacher, author and comedienne--offered 12 cooking lessons and lectures throughout Israel from December 9-22, 2010. For those of you who attended her classes, thank you for your support. For those of you who did not have the opportunity to see and hear Jessica, you may read comments of each class by Klara Levine who attended all the classes and wrote expressive emails describing her responses and reactions to them.

Jessica was interviewed by Israel Broadcasting for local television during her class "Cooking for Romance." The interview may be seen on
Simon Brown and Melanie Brown Waxman in Israel

Simon and Melanie spent 14 glorious days in Israel as guests of The Rices from June 9 to 22, 2011. During that time they presented eight cooking classes in Jerusalem, Raanana, Kefar Saba, and Bet Shemesh. Simon also conducted a two day Feng Shui seminar and 9 Ki lecture in Tel Aviv.
Klara Levine summarizes her impressions of the classes--she attended all their classes except the Feng Shui seminar--as follows:
"Because I was fortunate to attend all the classes, certain themes repeated themselves - one is that we have freedom when we realize we have choice - in all things. But to be truly free, we must 1) be conscious that it's OUR choice, no one else's, 2) that the choice is made with awareness of all the possibilites, of their possible effects, of knowledge gained by experience (tho perhaps first introduced by others), that we are free to change our choice at any time, that we are not choosing out of habit.
The second concept that has been imprinted on my mind is how to lighten up, in every way. First by the foods we eat, now in summer, with shorter cooking, smaller cuts, more vegetables, even (gasp - those who think macrobiotic doesn't include raw can now realize mb is much much more than what they realized) fresh salads and fresh fruits. How we handle the cooking, by being calm as we cook, not trying to do ten things at once, handling the food gently as we cut, stir or mix, handling the pots quietly so the cooking time is almost like a meditative time."

1. Mazal Tov: Ofer Kaner was born to Healey and Koby--Sheldon's daughter and son-in-law on August 25, 2010
Here is a photo of the newborn just after his circumcision

2. My youngest daughter Aya, and her fiance Ron Alon, were married on May 19, 2011. The wedding took place in a country setting not far from their home in Pardes Hannah accessible by a 3.0 kilometer unpaved road. It was the first time a wedding ever took place at this site. The ceremony was performed under a pergola; each of seven relatives and siblings recited simple blessings to the bride and groom composed by Aya and Ron. Many of the guests, including us, slept over in a tent and enjoyed breakfast together the next morning.

3. Travelog adventures in Belgium and England from July 14 to August 23, 2010

4. We moved to Zichron Yaakov, a lovely town on the Mediterranean coast on June 23, 2011, about a half hour's drive south of Haifa. We are very excited by the move and look forward to hosting many of our friends as we have before.
5. We were in Europe from July 8 to September 4, 2011. We taught palmistry and numerology in Antwerp, Belgium, at One World Festival in England and in Tuscany, Italy. We also vacationed near London for two weeks in August.
Macrobiotic Teacher's Conference
Valencia, Spain
We returned from
Valencia after a remarkably successful conference. The hiring of a
facilitator made all the difference; without him the group would have
floundered, bickered, bellowed, and not listened to each other as is
normally the case in any group setting.
But this time there was a difference. David, the facilitator, got the
group to learn to listen to each other even more than finding an
interest in speaking. It took about a day and a half to figure out that
the key to macrobiotic continuity is a vision, and not necessarily a
strong leader. A strong vision can replace the need for a leader and
serve as the center of a constellation of individual macrobiotic
centers--which is what exists today; e.g., a macro center in Lisbon,
Valencia, Jerusalem, etc, and strong scattered leaders who don't
necessarily operate as a "center."
The next two days consisted of identifying the vision. With David's
skillful leadership, a consensus vision was reached as follows:
"With a love for
life, our education in the art of living empowers individual and
planetary health"
The appreciation for David was so great that when he said his goodbyes
everyone gave him a resounding standing ovation usually reserved for a
diva at the end of a powerful operatic performance.
I am currently editing the hundreds of photos that I took of Valencia and of the conference. When it is completed I will link you to see them.
